Embracing Change: A Lesson From My Glasses

glasses

I want to chat about something we all deal with but often try to avoid—change. Yeah, I know, it's one of those words that can make you want to roll your eyes and pretend you didn’t hear it, but stick with me; this might just change your perspective (pun totally intended).

My Not-So-Glamorous Discovery

So, here’s a little story about change. For the longest time, I knew something was up with my vision. But like most of us, I was in deep denial. "Nah, I’m still rocking that 20/20 vision," I told myself. Until, of course, I couldn’t deny it anymore—I needed glasses. Not as a fashion statement or to look cool, but because I actually couldn't see properly without them! Yup, that was a huge change for me. Imagine suddenly having these things on your face all day, every day, just to see straight. Talk about a reality check.

No shade (or should I say, no blur) to anyone who's been wearing glasses for ages, but it took me a hot minute to accept this new reality. I mean, how many of us are clinging to the old way of doing things, even when it's not working for us anymore? Whether it's at home or on the job, we sometimes hold onto habits, routines, or even objects that really should be retired, just because it’s the way we’ve always done it.

The Perks of Embracing Change

Now, I know change can be a bit of a pain in the...well, you know. But it’s not all bad. In fact, change can bring some pretty awesome benefits, like:

  • Clarity: Just like my new glasses help me see clearly, embracing change can help clear up confusion in our lives.

  • Growth: We often grow the most when we step out of our comfort zones.

  • Efficiency: Holding onto outdated methods or tools? Letting them go could save you time and effort.

I mean, how many of us are squinting (literally or metaphorically) through life, struggling with something that has a simple solution, if only we’d just accept the change?

How to Adapt to Change (Without Losing Your Cool)

Adapting to change doesn’t have to be like pulling teeth. Here are a few tips that helped me—and might help you too:

1. Acknowledge the Need: The first step is admitting that something needs to change. Whether it’s your vision or your workflow, recognition is key.

2. Start Small: Don’t try to overhaul your entire life overnight. Pick one area to focus on and make gradual adjustments.

3. Be Open-Minded: Sometimes the solutions are outside of what we’re used to. Keep an open mind and be willing to try new things.

4. Celebrate Small Wins: Each step forward, no matter how small, is progress. Give yourself credit where it's due!

What Happens If You Don’t Adapt?

Let me tell you, stubbornness has a price. If I’d kept resisting the need for glasses, I’d still be struggling to see clearly, squinting at every sign, and tilting my head like a confused puppy just to make out the words. Not exactly a great look, right? The same goes for other areas in our lives—if we don’t adapt, we keep struggling with problems that have solutions just waiting for us to accept them.

Seeing the World Anew

Now that I’ve got my glasses, it’s like a whole new world has opened up. I can see things I was struggling to make out before, and I’ve stopped making life harder for myself by being stubborn and stuck in my ways. It feels so good to just see things clearly, without all the squinting, head-tilting, and waiting for everything to come into focus.

So, what’s the change you’ve been avoiding? Maybe it’s time to embrace it. Who knows, you might find that your life becomes a whole lot clearer, too.
